Our Story

Our humble beginnings started almost 12 years ago with a random call from Dave Marrs to Nate Daughenbaugh about possibly learning some Jiu Jitsu. Nate recently had returned from military service in South Korea and training under Professor John Frankl. While training Krav Maga, Dave had been introduced to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and was looking to continue improving.

Molding Champions

Starting in 2010, Steamboat Springs Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (formerly known as Old Dog Fight Club) began as a core group of practitioners. Nate willingly taught the basics of this martial art to a small group. After almost 12 years and a well-deserved black belt, Nate has been instrumental in educating a wide range of ages and abilities about the proper forms and techniques associated with BJJ. His patience and enthusiasm for BJJ have been passed on to his ever-growing coaching staff and students, which has led to a positive, encouraging, and uplifting atmosphere.

Fearless Future

The kid's program was integrated into the SSBJJ family in 2016 . It had been located at Steamboat Mountain School for 5 years under the watchful eye of Dave Marrs who also is a teacher at the school. After growing too big for the facilities at the school, Dave brought the program over to SSBJJ and officially joined forces.

Jiu Jitsu in Steamboat Springs has never been stronger or more popular. Continuing to participate and teach within this martial art has been at the core of our principles and intentions. Ever since the early days of the Founding Five members and Old Dog Fight Club, comeraderie and a family atmosphere have persevered.
